As a S&T Product Development Chemist, you will perform independently or as part of a team to create profitable and novel technical solutions to support our Architecture Coatings business growth in China, especially for waterborne decorative coatings. You will focus on new product development through a combination of professional NPI process managing and hands-on laboratory testing. Reporting to S&T Product Development Assistant Manager, your objective is to support profitable growth by enhancing the front-end development competency and improving the throughput. You will base in Tianjin.
Key Responsibilities
Capture and understand the market trends and customer needs, transform them into new product development portfolio, with clearly defined targets and timeline. Does not avoid complex assignment.
Develop innovative product solutions independently (new & existing) for keeping PPG a leader in both technology and cost position. Ability to conceptualize, develop and complete projects with a high degree of technical competence.
Responsible for the experimental design (DOE), reliable data's generation and analysis, reports, and action plans. Coordinate related activities including formulation, processing, application, and product certifications with local schemes.
Perform and document generally standardized, routine chemical and physical test of finished goods and compare the results with established standards and customer requirements. Develop the novel and efficient testing technique and fully utilize the available resource to solve complex problem.
Work closely with manufacturing and procurement organizations, to coordinate new raw materials (RM) implementation, alternate supplier qualifications, and RM quality to avoid production failures. Develop technical solutions to improve the supply chain agility (SSR) and product cost.
Participate in the R&D conferences as project champion, provide the updates on projects progress frequently. Both written reports and live presentation are required to be in English. Fully leverage PPG technical scale during the global Search & Re-deploy process. Drive technology transfer to accelerate localization and customization.
Work as one PPG group. Participate in multi-functional communication and collaboration with the project management and commercial teams to ensure alignment on technical objectives, timelines, progress, and future needs. Actively do the scientific knowledge exchange with technical associates around the globe | Cross BUs to promote knowledge retention, collaboration, and accelerated product development.
Works on multiple projects and prioritizes tasks based on changing priorities and timelines.
Drive excellence in technical reporting, and where applicable, patent filing. Assist leader to monitor scientific literature and competitors' activities.
Ensure adherence to all applicable environmental, health and safety regulations, standards and policies to help eliminate health hazards to prevent work stoppage and time loss due to accidents. Maintain equipment and laboratory facilities consistent with safety and quality principle.
Qualifications
Master's degree/higher in polymer chemistry or equivalent. Knowledgeable of chemistry/coatings technology and scientific test methods.
Good communication and learning ability (English is the major working language). Good cross-cultural communication with a strong desire to work with global teams.
Be able to work independently and make decisions. Positively find ways to proceed despite obstacles.
Be able to communicate at all levels and to motivate others in cooperative efforts.
Be able to work under pressure, such for multiple tasks & complex projects.
Familiarity with Technology Stage-gate process or knowledge on statistical tools/Six sigma.
