The Role
GoPro is seeking a candidate for the role of Staff Optical Test Engineer to architect, design, build, test, qualify and document the test systems that we use to validate optical components and assemblies. The Staff Optical Test Engineer is the owner of optical data from concept to mass production and has a direct impact on GoPro’s world-class image quality.
What You Will Do
- Develop, implement, and validate optical test methods, systems, and plans for optical parts and lens modules in high-volume manufacturing environments.
- Oversee and become an export on the operation and maintenance of test systems for Lens and Sub-Component Optical Quality (e.g., Trioptics ImageMaster HR and Pro, Panasonic UA3P, Interferometry, Stray Light, CMM, transmission, reflectance).
- Support the calibration and qualification of optical test stations, ensuring precision and repeatability across production lines (including GR&R studies).
- Write and maintain Python/MATLAB scripts for test automation, data parsing, analysis, and system operation. Create data visualization dashboards and reports to communicate optical performance, yield trends, and root cause analyses.
- Work closely with cross-functional engineering teams (Optical Design, Opto-Mechanical Design, Process Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing) to troubleshoot test failures and optimize test coverage.
Skills We’re Excited About
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate with both U.S. and China-based teams.
- 3+ years of experience working on test systems within a product development. Relevant products include but not limited to Camera Systems, AR/VR, LIDAR, Waveguides, Wearable Optics.
- Understanding of optical test systems and what is required to design them, bring them up, sign them off, gather trustworthy data from them, and present that data to stakeholders.
- Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, and/or other programming languages for test system automation, data analysis, and visualization.
Bonus Points For
- Extensive background in metrology tools and techniques, such as optical test, interferometry, profilometry, or CMM.
- Hands-on experience with Trioptics test platforms, especially ImageMaster HR and/or Pro9/10.
- Experience with 2D/3D Mechanical Design of Test Systems, comfortable in CAD environments designing and doing DFM/DFA on test systems.
- Experience with Zemax OpticStudio for optical simulation and analysis. Assist with Zemax-based simulations to correlate design intent with measured performance and troubleshoot test systems.
