About the Team
The GSMA Greater China Region unites the mobile ecosystem to advance a diverse range of initiatives in the region. Our focus spans the operation of MWC Shanghai, as well as the promotion and execution of GSMA’s global programs, advocacy efforts, membership services, and working groups.
Through our international events and platforms—including the MWC series, GSMA Intelligence, Mobile World Live, and regional events like Post-MWC Sharing (China Week) and Innovation Forums—we drive industry consensus, amplify our partners’ global impact, and collaborate closely with members and stakeholders across the broader ecosystem. Together, we foster international cooperation and enable the sustainable development and growth of the mobile industry in Greater China.
About the role
As Head of Commercial Growth for MWC Shanghai, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to increase revenue and drive overall business growth for the event. This role requires a strong understanding of event management, sales, marketing, and business development.
You will oversee the commercial aspects of the event, including sales, partnerships, and revenue generation, and lead a team to achieve ambitious growth targets by orchestrating MWC Shanghai’s commercial ecosystem to accelerate revenue, market share, and profitability – positioning it as Asia’s indispensable tech growth platform for global brands.
Key responsibilities
Holistic Revenue Strategy
Develop 3-year commercial roadmap integrating exhibitor sales, sponsorships, attendee monetisation, and new revenue streams
Conduct quarterly market scans to pivot strategies based on tech trends (AI/6G/quantum), competitive threats (e.g. Similar events in the region), and geo-economic shifts.
Sales & Business Development Leadership
Own P&L for all commercial revenue lines.
Lead high-value negotiations for Tier 1 exhibitors and global sponsors (corporate, government, associations).
Pioneer entry into new verticals (e.g., Mobile AI, automotive connectivity) and under-penetrated markets (LATAM, Africa).
Partnership & Sponsorship Architecture
Design tiered sponsorship packages with sponsorship team with custom ROI metrics (lead gen, brand lift, thought leadership).
Forge non-traditional alliances (e.g., cloud providers, venture capital firms) to explore co-create revenue-sharing programs.
Marketing Synergy
Understanding market trends, competitor strategies, and customer behaviour to inform sales and marketing approaches.
Working closely with marketing to create attractive sales packages and new features to attract new revenue.
Working closely with the marketing team to develop and execute effective marketing campaigns to promote the event and attract target audiences.
Team & Operational Excellence
Lead a team of 5 sales professionals and 10 cross-functional collaborators across Greater China, driving strategic growth and delivering on ambitious sales targets
Implement scalable processes (CRM hygiene, sales playbooks etc) to shorten sales cycles by 25%.
Data-Driven Optimisation
Track KPIs: exhibitor yield per sqm, sponsor renewal rate, attendee NPS**.
Deliver monthly commercial health dashboards to executive leadership.
Stakeholder Innovation
Collaborate with GSMA global teams to leverage Mobile World Congress brand equity.
Pilot 1–2 new commercial initiatives annually (e.g., curated investor meet ups, innovation tours).
About You
You are an accomplished team leader with comprehensive business-to-business (B2B) sales and account management experience in event industry or wider ICT industry.
You have a proven track record of achieving sales and customer satisfaction targets.
You also have experience of working complex, “matrix style” environments.
You are passionate about continuous improvement and innovation.
You have strong Mandarin and English language skills.
