ROLE SUMMARY
Discovery Network (DN), External Science Lead China is accountable for facilitating the evaluation & application of innovative platforms and technologies to strengthen Pfizer’s R&D pipeline. As part of the Discovery Network (DN) team the incumbent will perform targeted outreach to the life sciences community (including academia, biotech, venture firms, consortia, government, etc.) in key scientific hubs in China and Asia, broadly. The incumbent will have specific responsibilities related to enhancing the R&D pipeline by sourcing novel and enabling technologies and platforms focused on priority disease areas with transformative potential for patients, target proposals, and discovery projects. The general responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, supporting pre-clinical partnering strategies across R&D identifying the most promising external innovation fitting strategic needs, rigorously assessing the science & technology (by self as well as by building diligence teams as appropriate), leading due diligence and, together with Legal and BD colleagues, driving the governance process as appropriate. The incumbent will also have fiscal responsibilities (investing as well as monitoring spend, e.g., milestones, etc.) with regard to the Central Deals budget, the External Innovation Fund, seed investments, and/or R&D line budgets. Furthermore, the incumbent will leverage Pfizer R&D capabilities, as in-kind contributions to secure highest quality partnerships. The incumbent will also have responsibility for representing Pfizer within China and nearby countries.
To fulfill these responsibilities the incumbent will have
- Expertise to identify and assess diverse applications of technologies across therapeutic areas such as inflammatory diseases, metabolic disease and end organ failure diseases, and/or oncology.
- Familiarity with the scientific drivers of success in vaccine and biologics research.
- Strong networking capabilities (internal & external)
- Superb organizational awareness and ability to work with multiple internal stakeholders (i.e., R&D, Medical Affairs, and Pfizer Country Managers) within complex cross-functional relationships to gain alignment and drive governance & funding decisions.
- An understanding of the China and Asian R&D ecosystem; including academic and government funded research networks.
- Experience in project and alliance leadership
Discovery Network (DN) - External Science Lead, China will align and work with PRD leadership to help build the partnering strategy in China/Asia to support the early-stage portfolio.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Networking & collaborative sourcing of research-stage initiatives to provide R&D with innovative cutting-edge science, including novel biology, targets, Lead Discovery up to CAN projects, or breakthrough and enabling technologies & platforms from academia, biotech, healthcare, and other life science community sources.
- Engagement with leading academic institutions/PIs in key scientific hubs to source new projects and identify emerging capabilities
- Leverage Pfizer internal capabilities to establish R&D as partner-of-choice and secure partnerships (e.g., through in-kind contributions, equity investments, combination/leveraging Pfizer internal assets, etc.)
- Lead early projects or partnerships sourced via External Innovation Fund (EIF) as needed.
- Work with internal stakeholders to align, manage, and (if appropriate) expand Asia/China-based collaborations and partnerships.
- Represent Pfizer and be a leader of Chinese and Asian initiatives. Drive internal idea submission and decision-making on proposals and seek governance approval & funding as needed.
- Represent Pfizer at key events & conferences as needed.
- Help coordinate official Pfizer senior R&D management level visits within China/Asia.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- A PhD or MD/PhD with 10+ years of relevant industry experience; including human disease biology, strategy and portfolio development, and a strong scientific track record
- Strong networking and understanding of the Chinese R&D and biomedical ecosystem
- Strong EQ for internal (within Discovery Network, R&D, Business Development, Legal, etc.) and external networking and communication, including presentations to Pfizer leadership, potential external partners, and at scientific & partnering conferences
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in developing scientific and business strategies to support innovative pharmaceutical product development in pharma/biotech.
- Experience with search and evaluation, due diligence, relationship and collaboration building, alliance management.
- Experience in pharmaceutical drug development (Idea to Candidate) process
- Experience in managing/tracking R&D budgets
- Experience with New Chemical Entity (NCE) and New Biologic Entity (NBE) products.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate well across multiple business/group lines
