Lilly Catalyze360 is a comprehensive approach to enabling the early-stage biotech ecosystem, agnostic of the therapeutic area. There are three pillars designed to accelerate emerging and promising science, strategically removing barriers to support biotech innovation. Lilly Gateway Labs is an integral part linking Lilly to an entrepreneurial community fostering innovation. In addition to shared innovation lab space, Lilly Gateway Labs provides biotech companies direct access to Lilly scientists and expertise. Companies who work in Lilly Gateway Labs have the opportunity to collaborate with Lilly on projects of mutual interest, participate in shared learning forums with Lilly experts and partners, and have the potential for financial investment from Lilly, venture funds, or both.

Position Description:

This position with be a key point of contact for both tenants (biotechs), partners leveraged to execute operational activities within the building, and the global Lilly operations team. Holistically, three key pillars are necessary for successful execution of this role: excellence in operations, business development/external innovation, & project management. Foundational to these pillars are the Lilly values and passion to create an inclusive community. The successful candidate will lead day to day engagement at Gateway Labs site in Beijing as well as ensure operational excellence at all LGL sites across China. Provide operational support for contractual activities with licensees (e.g., leases up to date, CDAs in place). Assist in the daily management of existing and potential portfolio companies. Help create and foster an inclusive building & Gateway Labs community vibe and help deliver community programming in partnership with Gateway communications. Work with Lilly’s global business development organization to build Lilly’s brand in China. Engage on strategic projects and conversations for Gateway Labs and for tenants. Participate in company selection for site working both along site head, and in partnership with Venture Sciences, LCIP and Therapeutics Area S&E.

Responsibilities:

Functional and Technical Expertise:

  • Drug discovery & development experience in a variety of roles (e.g., a combination of some of the following: at the bench, business development, competitive intelligence, clinical execution, operations) are foundational to engaging Gateway Labs prospective tenants, and the overall life sciences ecosystem in Beijing.
  • Successful experiences engaging external companies on innovative science to evaluate potential ‘fit’ for a variety of business development constructs.
  • Project management skills & know-how in creating, hosting, and leading cross-functional conversations and setting/aligning clear goals and expectations for outcomes of conversations
  • Fosters a collaborative environment between Lilly Research Labs and those companies in the Shanghai accelerator. Examples: 1) symposia from specific technical areas e.g. regulatory or business development 2) facilitates connecting companies internally with key technical areas.
  • Comfortable doing financial analysis, including creating and reconciling budgets
  • Responsible for day-to-day operational site management and applies rigor in the oversight and execution of operations in the context of external innovation with attention to detail and relationships

  • Manage tenant rosters and deliver onboarding materials and program
  • Primary point of contact for routine interactions with landlord excluding lease agreements
  • Monitor & engage on tenant feedback about site amenities, tenant and building community, and Lilly engagement/programming
  • Maintain operational support systems/processes and metrics to enable the LGL strategy in partnership with other Gateway sites

  • Prepare monthly budget reviews including partner follow-up to assess accuracy as needed
  • Identify, implement, and maintain logical and efficient tenant communication channels (e.g. distribution lists, tenant sites).
  • Establish working knowledge of accelerator/incubator landscape in partnership with LCIP.
  • Maintain materials (e.g. onboarding materials, pitch decks, leave-behinds) that are aligned with LGL strategy and branding in collaboration with LGL communications

  • Individual will play an integral role in fostering and maturing relationships within both the building (with Lilly & Biotech companies) and the local ecosystem
  • Engage on company selection for site.

Additional Preferences:

  • Graduate degree (PhD, MD, MBA) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry drug development
  • Excellent English and Mandarin
  • Demonstrated ability to think and work creatively; solutions oriented
  • Ability to work across cultures—people, company and geographic.
  • Proven ability to bring teams together (team facilitation), create the right conversation, set agenda and guide/host conversation
  • Experience with search and evaluate and business development and passion for pharmaceutical innovation and partnering


Additional Information:

  • Role Located in Beijing China and on site 4 days a week
  • 10-20%, mostly within China
