Risk Management helps the firm understand, manage and anticipate risks in a constantly changing environment. The work covers areas such as reviewing portfolios for investment risks, liquidity risks, and counterparty risks, measured by risk sensitivities (e.g., Duration, Spread Widening, Equity Factors, etc.), Value at Risk, Stress Tests and other position and portfolio metrics. Risk Management provides independent oversight and maintains an effective control environment.
As a Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for China Asset Management you will oversee the risk governance and oversight framework for the firm's asset management activities within China. This role requires close collaboration with Firmwide Risk Executive teams, Line of Business (LOB) Risk teams, Compliance, Conduct and Operational Risk (CCOR), as well as business, control, and other functional teams to proactively define, measure, and manage risks associated with the firm's asset management products, services, and activities in China. The CRO will report to the APAC CRO for Asset Management and be part of the Asset Management Risk and China Leadership teams.
Key responsibilities include:
Investment Risk Oversight:
- Develop and maintain a robust risk governance and oversight framework (including but not limited to reputation, investment, liquidity and counterparty risk) for asset management activities in China, ensuring effective risk identification, measurement, and control.
- Provide strategic leadership on risk management practices and advise senior management on risk profiles and emerging risks, supporting responsible growth initiatives in China's asset management sector.
- Serve as the second line of defense contact for China asset management leadership, fostering strong relationships with senior regional and business stakeholders.
- Chair or co-chair local risk committee and provide updates to relevant global, regional, and legal entity boards, committees, and forums as needed.
- Participate in regional and business strategy decision-making, assessing risks associated with new asset management initiatives, products, services, acquisitions, and operational activities in China.
- Provide regular updates to Chinese regulators and ensure active participation in business regulatory exams, with a focus on the first line of defense.
- Stay informed on industry trends and regulatory developments in China, anticipating areas of focus for regulators and keeping business and Risk and Compliance colleagues informed

Minimum Skills, Experience and Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree and Managing Director with 15+ years of relevant experience in asset management or related fields, with a strong focus on the Chinese market.
- Deep understanding of risk governance and oversight frameworks, as well as various risk types, including investment risk, market risk, and operational risk, specifically within the context of China.
- Familiar with China regulatory requirements specific to the asset management business.
- Exceptional organizational leadership skills, with experience managing diverse teams and operating within a matrix organization structure.
- Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts clearly and concisely, and proficiency in Mandarin is preferred.
- Proven ability to collaborate and build strong partnerships, with seasoned negotiation skills and the maturity to manage multiple parties with potentially conflicting interests.
- Ability to work with individuals at all levels in the organization and contribute to the strategic direction of the firm and the team
- High degree of initiative, self-direction, and ability to work well under pressure
- Attention to detail – takes personal responsibility to ensure that work meets the highest quality standards
- Responsible for appropriate resourcing of the team in terms of capacity and skill set
