The purpose of the Marketing BU is to sustainably maximize cash flows from the marketing of Anglo American products and services. In support of this, we have set ourselves a target to deliver a considerable uplift in Value by 2030.
China represents one of the most important markets for Anglo American’s products as well as a potential partner for investment and source for supply of goods & services. The establishment of the trading WFOE in Shanghai is to enable the company to get closer to China market and also set the platform for tapping into the domestic market for RMB based trading, adding more toolkit for packaging services as material solution provider to end users.
Job Description
What you’ll do
Execute the fulfillment of contractual transactions related to Copper (physical and financial) within China domestic market to satisfy Anglo American’s and customers’/suppliers’ contractual obligations and develop and manage a selected customer/supplier portfolio for Anglo American within China domestic, whilst optimising contractual netbacks. Being commercially active in the market to trade within assigned risk limits.
Support the Senior Trader Copper with a) the China domestic book optimisation by identifying opportunities from his customer/supplier portfolio, and b) with the execution of the China domestic financial trading strategy, in line with the global Trading strategy and within risk tolerances and governance frameworks.

Performance & Delivery (required for all roles)
Customer/Supplier Relationship
- Develop and build relationships with China domestic copper metallic customers/suppliers to maintain and maximize netbacks and value creation.
- Support the expansion of transactional base with Over-the-Counter counterparties and exchanges.
- Develop relationship with warehouse and logistics providers within China domestic market.
Financial Trading
- Support the execution of the China domestic Base Metals financial trading strategy following guidance from the Senior Trader Copper.
- Support the hedging requirements for Nickel.
- Promote continuous dialog with London and Singapore trading and risk teams to expedite resolution any explanation of discrepancies detected in the daily risk reporting processes.
- At close of each day, support generation of daily market report showing market closes, LME-SHFE arbitrage as well as time spread relationships.
Sales & Account Management
- Manage China domestic customer/supplier accounts to sell volumes through relationship management, contract negotiations within approved conditions and conclusion and resolution of operational challenges following Anglo American’s governance processes and business practices
- Optimize value of the China domestic trading book throughout customer/supplier negotiation process.
- Sales execution by following sales processes
- Work closely with the sales operations team, offering coaching when appropriate, to oversee the sales execution process and ensure excellent service delivery and quick resolution of customer/supplier queries.
- Address and resolve any customer/supplier complaints/service shortfalls.
Trading Plan & Targets
- Support yearly trading planning process for Copper metallic within China domestic market.
- Support the optimization of the BMM global trading strategy by identifying opportunities from his customer/supplier portfolio.
Compliance (required for all roles)
- Adherence to all Anglo American Group and Marketing policies and procedures, as well as observing proper standards of conduct relating to the role.
Qualifications
What we’re looking for
- Fully proficient in China domestic and offshore copper metallic market and metal import flow, including pricing mechanisms, and hedging operations.
- Strong understanding of competitive landscape in the region.
- A relevant degree (desirable)
- At least 3 years SHFE Financial trading experience preferably in Base Metals and ability to articulate Financial Trading strategies to a broader audience
- Technical understanding of China domestic copper metallic market and metal import flow
- Understanding of the copper market, including pricing mechanisms, arbitrages and hedging operations.
- Strong team spirit, open to constant dialogue with colleagues around the world.
- High organizational skills and ability to multitask and prioritize conflicting deadlines.
- Good interpersonal skills and strong relationship building.
- Strategic approach towards negotiations and thorough preparation.
